Review of 2012: ECCT Thanks You

Our Field volunteers: Thank you to those who worked so hard this year to get our Sponsor a Cancer Patient campaign going.

Our Field volunteers: thank you to those who worked so hard this year as we made our Sponsor a Cancer Patient campaign live. Amongst other things, this team went into 3 areas in Harare: Mbare, Hatcliffe and Mufakose handing out application forms when we were seeking marginalized  cancer patients to support.

2012 has been a year of hard work and achievement for the ECCT and we could not have done it without you – the people who support and encourage us. We would like to give you a rundown of what we have achieved this year, with your support.

Planning for this campaign began with Founder Teurai Chanakira, Project Management Consultant – Maria Magembe and Harare-based Project Manager – Marshall Mutsamwira, at the end of  2011. In May 2012, our five field volunteers assisted Mr. Mutsamwira and videographer, Mr. Steven Chikosi, to go into three areas: Mufakose, Hatcliffe and Mbare in order to find five marginalized cancer patients and their families to assist.

The aim was to find patients to assist with 1 monthly Dr’s consultation (USD$60); USD$50/month for medications and school fees for one child per family.

99% of our applications were received from Hatcliffe and after using a universal scoring system, which assessed applicants on the basis of need – we chose four patients from Hatcliffe and one from inner city Harare.

Their names are: Virimayi (cancerous jaw mass), Takudzwa (Ewing Sarcoma), Sarah (cervical cancer), Sipelile (cervical cancer) and Rejoice (cervical cancer). You can see and hear them tell their stories in the video below.

Although we have not formed a partnership with AfrAsia Kingdom Zimbabwe Ltd, we would like to mention them and give a big thank you for their donation to the patients of $600, following our ECCT Launch event, in Harare.

Thank You to Our Team!

Our team worked so hard this year. We must acknowledge the efforts of those who helped us either as team members or on a consultancy basis. Maria Magembe, our Project Management Consultant played an instrumental role in helping us define our vision and plan for 2012, and is assisting with the planning for 2013 and beyond.

Marshall Mutsamwira, who is our Project Manager in Harare, coordinated all the projects on the ground. Mr. Mutsamwira has been remarkable in terms of his dedication and commitment to the ECCT and the patients.

We would like to thank Brand Consultant, Miss Lani Masuku, who assisted with Brand development in 2012. She gave crucial and invaluable advice and direction, all of which benefit the patients we are supporting as an end result.

The ECCT recognises that nutrition is a key element of a cancer patient’s recovery. We focus on promoting natural health on our blog, and love to inform people about natural and accessible foods which promote health in Zimbabwe. We would like to thank our Natural Health Blogger, Eden Fadzo Chiuslekuda, who is the eldest daughter of the late Mrs. Elizabeth Chanakira.  The blogs were extremely popular and were well read by audiences globally.

Just before we started searching for the patients we are supporting, we welcomed five new field volunteers: Mr. Clement Manika, Mr. Clever Madziwa, Miss Trish Kadeteme, Miss Sarudzai Rwizhi and Miss Thelma Chirimuuta – all qualified within the Social Work field in Zimbabwe. Their drive and determination in finding the patients we are supporting was incredible.

During our Sponsor a Cancer Patient Campaign, talented Videographer & Photographer, Mr. Steven Chikosi, captured all images and the video of our patients in Zimbabwe. These images and the final video are how the world is able to view our patients and hear their stories.
